James Vasquez

James Vasquez is an award-winning theater and film director, writer and actor who trained at the Juilliard School of Drama.  As an actor he’s appeared Off-Broadway, regionally, and on film and television.  He made his screenwriting debut with Daisy 3 Picture’s 29th and Gay, and received the Emerging Artist Award at both FilmOut San Diego and North Carolina Gay & Lesbian Film Festivals.  His follow-up film, Ready? OK!, was inspired by a failed attempt in 2nd grade to participate in his Catholic school’s pep rally.  Ready? OK!, which stars D3P co-founder Carrie Preston, went to play festivals worldwide, taking top honors in Seattle, San Diego and North Carolina.  Ready? Ok! is his feature film directorial debut.  Both films can currently be found on iTunes.

As a director, James is a mainstay in the San Diego theatre scene, most notably helming the Old Globe’s annual production of Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas.  Additionally at the Old Globe, he’s directed The Rocky Horror Show, the west coast premiere of Rich Girl, as well as providing choreography for several contemporary and Shakespeare plays throughout the past several seasons.  His other San Diego theatre credits include the west coast premiere of [title of show], Sweeney Todd, CATS, Next Fall, Clybourne Park, and Pippin.  He’s led developmental workshops at Goodspeed Musicals, the La Jolla Playhouse, and Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

A former second baseman, James discovered tap shoes as a teen and never looked back.  When not creating, he can be found in his backyard with his dogs.
